CFG as an innovation action under the objective "modelling, simulation and Cloud HPC computing" and has contributed to the smartness of factories especially in terms of simulating and improving manufacturing processes.
CFG has run different application experiments minimizing defects and downtime in manufacturing. Numerical simulation and quality of data have shown to be decisive factors for successful prediction and remain of high importance for future development and further uptake.
AI is a major trend and has also been explored in CFG to detect anomalies in production processes. However it´s potential is not yet fully exploited, explainable AI and a combination and integration of AI with simulation technology promises further leaps forward in the future.
CFG has helped many SMEs with their manufacturing processes ranging from cutting over milling up to 3D printing. However, multi-material 3D and 4D printing as an advanced manufacturing process for functional integrated parts is still an open challenge for the future comprising the digital process chain (design, analyses, pre-processing, etc.) as well as manufacturing and materials technology.
CFG has mainly been working with volatile data. In contrast persistent data is going to be tactled in a succeeding European project called DIGITbrain which will start at July 1st, 2020. As data can have huge volume, in the future highways not just for data but also for bringing algorithms/models to the data become more and more important.
