Summary of pharma use case: The s-X-AIPI pharma use case is based in Austria in the CC flow (RCPE) chemical lab. This use case deals with the conversion of cortisone into adenosterone in a single step electrochemical reaction. The goal of the use case is an increased sustainability and operator assistance through human-in-the-loop concepts. The results from this process will be applicable to a wider range of electrochemical conversions and assist the a reduced energy consumption as well as a waste reduction.
Specific self-X solutions in the pharma use case: The solutions enabling the goals described above will encompass (1) development of optical coherence tomography (OCT) monitoring of the electrode, (2) process modeling for conversion prediction and (3) automatic process control for optimized energy consumption. In (1) RCPE has already developed its proprietary 3D OCT in-line monitoring technology and automatic real-time image evaluation allow for conclusions about electrode corrosion and fouling. In (2) data from the OCT will be combined with infrared spectroscopy (IR). For the IR data a chemometric model is developed which translates the obtained spectra into a chemical composition. The process optimization (3) will automatically react in the case of process deviations or impending damage to the electrodes. In these solutions the involvement of the expert operator (human-in-the-loop) is a critical step and the self-X solutions will be designed in a way to optimally support the operator.
