Green Assessment Method

Green Assessment Method
Summary
Motivation / Need: In a life cycle assessment, the energy consumption used in the production process, may cause significant impact in the climate change potential, therefore, poor data availability and inconsistency of energy consumption data may lead to unrealistic results and conclusions. Data collection for LCI requires substantial effort and it is the most critical part of a life cycle assessment. This effort is amplified by the inherent complexity of machine tools and their operational behavior possibilities. Application Area: Applicable to production planning. Solution Concept: A methodology is proposed, while definitions for each step are given. Implementation is done by using the KCL-ECO tool by VTT. The machine tool “green” assessment method provides a new procedure which improves the transparency and consistency of the life cycle inventory phase (LCI) for machine tools. Partners have expressed interest in commercializing the Green Assessment Method, as well as using it both internally and to provide external consultancy services.
