In order to fully characterise joints a broad range of parameters have to be measured. The goal of this deliverable is to select a few proper non-destructive and destructive testing methods which are able to give a satisfactory joint quality determination. It will be shown, why and under which boundary conditions the following testing methods are expected to be suitable:
- visual examination,
- dimensional measurements,
- surface crack inspection,
- liquid penetrant test
- leak testing,
- laser ultrasound testing,
- X-ray tomography,
- bend testing,
- tensile testing,
- peel testing,
- axial compression testing,
- torsion testing,
- metallographic investigations,
- hardness measurements,
- fatigue testing,
- Measurement of the electrical conductivity.
Conclusions
The testing methods used within the JOIN’EM project fulfil all requirements for a high-quality characterisation of the tubular and sheet metal joints. Both the non-destructive and the destructive methods, cover a large range of sample parameters to measure, so that a satisfying description of the quality of each sample can be given. Most of the limitations of one testing methods can be compensated by the use of others, so that there will be no lack of characterisation quality. This enables to give an extensive feedback for analysis of joint quality. The execution of the testing program of all samples can be done as planned.
