Business Case 2: Power Cables Provider

Expected impact Within EPES, NKT is targeting new product and customer support services for high voltage cables, to provide cable monitoring services that help to redefine grid load and safety limits, enabling a significantly improved utilization of grid capacity. Especially the consistently increasing share of renewable energy in the European energy grid (e.g. by offshore wind parks, etc.), together with the decentralized and discontinuous production of renewable energy, will have a high impact at the grids, asking for a significant higher grid capacity (e.g. with respect to energy distribution and transport of electricity to energy storages, etc.). The envisaged EPES engineering tools will enable NKT to offer services for a more profitable usage of available resources and an enhanced operating life and safety of the grids. Services for product design, maintenance, and customer support are deployed, in order to gather patterns and trends from cable monitoring data and maintenance events and use the insights for future designs. In particular, the cable monitoring and maintenance services are used for gathering data which is then mined for reusable patterns and trends to be used in the cable design service. Such patterns are stored as “known issues” in a database, in order to be available for supporting future cable design processes. Furthermore, NKT-specific KPIs for all three services can be computed and monitored.
