Active-screen plasma co-alloying technology for enhancing oxidation and wear resistance and reducing friction coefficient of tool surfaces

University of Birmingham has worked on improvement of tool surface: plasma nitriding and simultaneous co-alloying with both interstitial element N (i.e. nitriding) and substitutional alloying elements (such as V and Ag) can be used to enhance the tribological performance of Nickel based CM247LC superalloy. By adjusting the relative amount of silver and vanadium and the process parameters, active screen co-alloying with Ag, V and N can reduce the coefficient of friction of the materials at both the room temperature and elevated temperature up to 600°C. Molybdenum based TZM alloys can be successfully plasma nitrided at 660°C and above to produce a thin hard case with a shallow diffusion zone. The hard nitride layer can significantly reduce the coefficient of friction and wear volume of TZM alloy, which is consistent in different media at room temperature. The tribological performance is also improved at elevated temperature such as 300 and 600°C.
